Stoma leakage can be a frustrating and challenging issue for many individuals, particularly for those managing high-output sites. At LumaCleanCares, we’ve received numerous questions about using StomaEase™ powder to address leakage effectively. Here, we’ll share some tips and insights to help you make the most of your powder and reduce discomfort from leakage.

Understanding the Powder-to-Gel Transition

StomaEase™ powder is designed to absorb moisture and form a semi-solid gel-like layer that helps protect your skin from irritation. However, achieving the ideal balance between powder and gel can take a bit of experimentation. Some common issues and solutions include:

1. Too Much Powder Remaining:

  • Problem: If you notice a significant amount of powder remains dry and doesn’t transform into a gel, it’s likely due to insufficient moisture (leakage).  This situation is still a positive event, since the fluid leakage is being absorbed into the StomaEase™ Powder and helping to keep your skin and stoma area dry.
  • Solution: Adjust the timing before cleaning the stoma area. Waiting a bit longer allows the powder to absorb more liquid and form the protective gel layer. This can also help prevent waste and ensure maximum effectiveness.  If you are also using the StomaDisc™ then it will act as a StomaEase™ powder reservoir for a longer lasting effect.

2. Gelling Too Quickly:

  • Problem: If the StomaEase™ powder gels almost immediately and doesn’t last long enough to absorb ongoing leakage, you may not be using enough StomaEase™ powder.
  • Solution: Apply a more generous layer of StomaEase™ powder. This provides more material to absorb the excess moisture, creating a thicker, longer-lasting gel barrier.  We at LumaCleanCares deliberately added an extra half oz of StomaEase™ powder for a total of 1.5 oz per bottle.

Tips for Adjusting StomaEase™ Powder Usage

Every enteral stoma is unique, with variation of body chemistry, some have excessive leakage and others do not. The StomaEase™ powder is formulated to work under most conditions. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Start Small: Begin with a light layer of powder and gradually increase the amount as needed. Observing how the powder reacts over time can help you determine the right amount.
  • Monitor Timing: Experiment with how long you wait after applying the powder. A slight adjustment in timing can significantly impact its effectiveness.
  • Combine with Other Products: For severe leakage, pairing StomaEase™ powder with products like the StomaDisc™ can help prevent moisture wicking often associated with Tubie pads or gauze. Ensuring the site is as dry as possible before applying these products enhances their performance and reduces skin irritation.
  • Keep a Log: Documenting your process, including the amount of StomaEase™ powder used and the results, can help you identify patterns and make informed adjustments.

Installation of StomaDisc™

If you are using the StomaDisc™ with the StomaEase™ powder, make sure it is raised rim facing down and flat part facing out. This will ensure maximization of powder usage.  The StomaDisc™ is a StomaEase™ powder reservoir helping to hold the powder over your stoma.

Cleaning the Stoma Area & Removing the Gel

To clean the stoma area, use warm water and a soft cloth. Gently wipe the area, ensuring it is clean and free from any residue, and allow it to dry completely before applying StomaEase™ powder. To clean the StomaDisc™, rinse it under warm water and wash it with mild soap. Ensure the disc is thoroughly rinsed and dry before reuse.
